The mayor (Rev. E. T. Cox) left this morning to attend the Municipal Conference at Wellington. Mr W. A. Flavell and Mr James Rogg left by the express this morning bound for Westport. Mr A. E. M'Dougall, accompanied by his wife and Miss Livingstone, started this morning on an extensive world tour. Sir Hubert Wilkins arrived in Dunedin yesterday by car from Tiinaru, and left on his return by the limited express at night. _ His brief visit was in connection with tho affairs of the Ellsworth expedition. -Mr H. A. Bruce, M.L.A., State Minister of Public Works in Queensland,' visited Dunedin at the week-end in the course of a tour of New Zealand. He left by car on Saturday afternoon for Invercargill, and from there he intends returning, north by way of the southern lakes district and Mount Cook. Dr Mary Douglas and Dr G. W.Gower have successfully passed a pilot license examination, the former being the first woman pilot to qualify as a pilot in Hamilton. Three Hamilton doctors now hold pilot licenses in the town, the other being Dr M. M. Hockin, medical superintendent of the Waikato Hospital.—Press Association. Official,advice from the University of New Zealand shows that Mr Alan T.; Begg attained his M.A. degree with first-class honours in English and French. , The death of Mr R. W. Baxter, of Baldwin street, North-east Valley-, signals the passing of one of the pioneers of the early ’sixties. Mr Baxter arrived in Otago from Victoria, being the youngest of a family of brothers who followed the varied occupations of bullock driving, gold mining, and farm-, ing on the Maniototo Plain. The deceased leaves a widow and four of a family to mourn their loss—Mrs J. C.Weir, “ Edenhank,” Gimmerburn; Mrs H. Payne, St. Kilda; Miss 11. Baxter, Dunedin; and Mr K. Baxter. Wellington. Mr W. P. Aldridge, assistant postmaster at Wellington, has been, promoted to the position of chief postmaster at Hamilton, as successor to Mr C. A. Mathieson, who retires on . superannuation on the 15th inst. Mr joined the department at in 1897, and served as a telegraphist in severel important offices, including Wakapuaka, when the Eastern Extension Cable Company’s telegraphic business was circulated from that office. During the Great War Mr Aldridge served as a commissioned officer in tho N.Z.E.E.
