RIFLE SHOOTING
WAIRARAPA MEETING [Per United Press Association.] CARTERTON, March 5. The Wairarapa Rifle Association’s meeting at Papawai to-day was very successful and good shooting was witnessed. There was ideal weather—bright sunshine, with a _ very light breeze down the range which freshened as the afternoon wore on. Fourteen targets were in use, and there were ninety competitors. C. Gower (Wanganui) secured a possible in the Bidwill Match, 300yds, and W. N. Masefield (Blenheim), T. Orr (Greytown), and C. J. Nix (Featherston) all got possibles in the Buchanan Match of 500yds. The Maori markers refused to work after 6 o'clock unless further payment, were made. The shooters were down on the mound for the service match waiting for the targets to rise, but the match had to be abandoned. WEST TAiERI DEFENCE CLUB On Saturday the above club held a ladiea’ day. Conditions uere ten shots at 500yds', the four highest to shoot a further ten shots at the same distance. Airs L. T. Hughes’s cake for highest score was won by President A. T. Graham, Rifleman S. Mitchell being second and Rifleman J. Dickie being third. The ladies who drew the names of these riflemen and thereby won the prizes donated by the chib were Miss M'Gregor, Mrs W. J. Irving, and Mrs ,1. Nichol respectively. After afternoon tea provided by the ladies the various prizes were presented by Mrs H. W.
