FIFTY THOUSAND DEATHS
TOLL OF THE ROAD FURTHER PREVENTIVE MEASURES PROPOSED (British Official Wireless.)' Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. RUGBY, February 8. Experiments will be carried out officially in an effort to reduce road accidents in Britain, which in the past eight years have accounted for 50,837 deaths. Legislative measures to be tested include authorised crossing places for pedestrians, traffic lanes, complete barriers instead of islands fixed down the middle of wide roads, and a cycling track by the side of a road. In addition local authorities are being circularised suggesting measures by which roads and road surfaces may be constructed to minimise the risk of accident. The circular also emphasises the desirability of using a rougher surface and fast coloured material, and uniformity between local authorities,.
