WATER DEPARTMENT.

TO THE EDITOR, Sir,—Can you explain why the City Council employs as caretaker of one of the .city reservoirs a man who is well over the retiring age, and is not yet to be-retired ? He was due to be superannuated ,five years ago, but he has annually applied for, and been granted a year’s extension, until about, this time last year the council notified him to finish up in March, 1934. :He has now been granted yet another’s year’s extension. In these times, when so many men are available and looking for positions, this sort of thing should not be allowed to go on, and there is yet time for the council to notify the man concerned to retire finally next month. The chairman of the Water Committee probably knows all about this matter. Would the chairman therefpre explain why this man has been retained for another year, and why he was not superannuated five years ago. when he reached retiring age.—l am, etc., Fair Deal. February 7. [The case has been Considered by the City Council, which has decided that the services of the employee in question shall be retained for another year. The retiring age under the .superannuation fund is sixty-five years, but the council has the right to retain an employee year by year beyond that age if it desires t 6 do so.—Ed. E.S.]
