BURNSIDE STOCK SALES

GOOD LAMB MAMET EXPECTED With exporters operating at increased limits, and with butchers keen to buy at schedule rates, a very satisfactory sale of good quality lambs was expected to eventuate at Burnside to-day. Practically all through the fat cattle sale late rates were maintained. A slight drop in sheep values had continued throughout the sale of two races, and it was thought that prices would remain about even until tho last.

Two hundred and eighty-six head of cattle made up a medium-sized entry.Apart from about three trucks of good heavy bullocks, the yarding could be classed as ordinary in quality. There was a small percentage of cows and heifers, and the majority of these were of medium quality. At the start there was a dragging sale, and prices wore slightly easier than at last week’s sale, but there was an improvement as the market progressed. The increase, however. nas not of much account, and was only noticeable on any prime sorts. Taken all over, the prices were about on a par with those of last week. The top price was £ll 17s 6d, this being secured for a consignment from Mr M’Gregor, of Otautau, and the same amount was received for a draft on account of Mr R. Kirk, Mosgiel. Another small entry of fat sheep numbered about 1,500 As was the case in the cattle yarding, the quality was very ordinary, there being only two trucks of wethers that could be classed as good. A fair proportion of the yarding was comprised of ewes of rather inferior quality. Values at the opening were easier than last week by about 2s, this drop being noticeable on all classes. As there were no country butchers present, it was not likely that fates would improve unless for a few heavy wethers. Good quality lambs were entered. Becauv2 the export buyers have again increased their limits a good sale was assured. In addition to this expected extra demand, butchers indicated that they would be keen buyers at prices equal to and in some cases above schedule rates.

A large entry of good quality vealers sold at late rates, while the store cattle comprised a medium yarding of mostly young sorts from eighteen months to two years old. Competition for these was lively, up to £4 being given for the two-year-olds, and to £2 4s for the younger stuff. Two-year-old heifers sold to £2. Inferior quality was seen in the medium yarding of boner cows, and the entry sold at late rates to £2 10s.

Bacon pigs experienced a better sale, being 10s a head dearer than last week. This class sold from £2 17s 6d to £3 15s, which works out at about 5d lb. Poi’kers brought from £1 15s to £2 Bs. or equal to about 6d lb. Stores were sold later in the afternoon.
