SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

THItEE OTAGO RECORDS BROKEN JARVIS BROTHERS IN FORM SPIRITED RACING The Otago senior swimming and diving eliampinnship carnival attracted a large crowd to the Municipal Baths last night, and a well-varied programme of championship and handicap events provided some most spirited racing, three Otago records being broken during the evening. The 100yds men's championship was cxoectcd to provide a close tussle, but after the first lap W. -I. Jarvis (St. riairl, holder of the intermediate 100yds title, went away from the others and put the issue beyond doubt, winning by 2yds in 57 4-ssce. which broke his own Otago record by twofifths of a second. It was a great swim, ami -Jarvis appeared to bale something in hand at the finish. .), I). O’Driscoll capped off his last week's long-distance successes by taking second place from the fourteen-year-o!d intermediate, S. W. Jarvis. The surprise of the race was G. Field’s failure to gain a place, for, alter being with the others over the first lap, he 101 l away and finished fourth. M. J. Jar

vis did not swim in the 220yds championship, but be swam into second place in the 150yds men's hack-stroke championship, and with H. Devlin also annexed the life-saving championship alter an exciting race with the titleholders, C. Durand and J. Durand. P. E. Alathieson (Kiwi) retained his title in th: 150yds men’s baek-strokc championship, and finished with plenty of dash, lowering his own Otago record from Imin 57 l-ssec to Imin 52sec.

Owing to indisposition Reg. Geddcs was unable to start in the 220yds men’s breast stroke championship, which resulted in a close and exciting race between the promising Dunedin swimmer. C. Elliott, and C. Durand (St. Clair). Elliott swam a well-judged race, and won bv a couple of yards in .‘lmin 20 .‘J-ssec.

One of the outstanding performances of the evening was the win of S. W. Jarvis (Otago intermediate 220yds and 440yds champion), who added the senior 220yds title to Ids lengthy list of successes this season. After the first three laps the Dunedin swimmer went away from the other swimmers to finish an easy winner by Byds in 2min 32 2-ssec, which broke Ids own existing Otago record by 4 l-ssec. Jarvis previously put up similar time iu a handicap event earlier in the season. but on that occasion it could not be passed as a record. The men’s and ladies’ diving championships attracted only two competitors in each ease, but some very good displays were witnessed. R. O. •Johnson "(Dunedin) showed definite suneriority over A. Williams (Dunedin) in the men’s diving championship. the latter diving below his best form. Johnson gave a consistently good .exhibition, securing good flight and diving with plenty of confidence and clash. The ladies’ diving championship resulted in a very close contest between Aliss J. Eggers (Zenith) and Airs E. C. Isaacs (Kiwi), both exNew Zealand champions. The position sce-sawed to the very last dive, in which Aliss Eggers placed the issue beyond doubt. 'Both dived well up to standard.

A lengthy programme was put. through well up to time, the absence of delav between events being due to the efforts of Air W 7. H. Matthews (superintendent) and his willing band

of assistants. Mr W. A. Jenkins was starter, Mr D. C. Bannatyne assistant starter, and Messrs S. Brown, W. H. Matthews, and E. H. -lames swimming judges. Messrs E. G. -lames, H. E. Walker. J. L.
