ANOTHER FORTY CHAINS TO BE TAR-SEALED

FULFILMENT OF WEST HARBOUR'S OBLIGATIONS

At the monthly* meeting of ilio West Harbour Borougo Council last evening the borough engineer (Mr F. .1. Williams) lepurtcci on the negotiations lor the completion of 4U chains ol road which remains to be tar-sealed under the council’s control. The mayor (Mr T. H. Harridge) presided over the following;—Crs .Smith, Rodgers, Asher, Venn, Kay, Forgie, Robb, and Taylor. The Engineer reported that the question of tar-sealing the Tunnel Hill had been discussed at the conference held with the members of the Main Highways Board, and lie had been advised than an application for the work to he done would ba favourably considered. The length would bo 40 chains and the cost £l3O, allocated as follows:-—Main Highways Board, £100; Dunedin City Corporation, £25; West Harbour Council, £lB 15s; Port Chalmers Borough Council, £6 ss. This would make a. complete sealing j'ob of the road under the council’s control.

The Engineer further reported that from October 1 to December 31, 1933, a total of £lB2 7s 7d had been spent on the Dunedin-Port Chalmers highway. The amount was to be found by the local bodies interested in the following proportion : —Dunedin City Corporation, £9l 3s lOd; West Harbour Borough Council, £6B 7s lOd; Port Chalmers Borough Council, £22 15s lid.—Received. The report was approved. CORRESPONDENCE. The Secretary of the Burkes-St. Leonards Regatta Committee wrote inviting the mayor and councillors to be present at the regatta on March 4. Received. Advice was received that the annual conference of delegates to the Municipal Association of New Zealand would bo held at Wellington, commencing on March 14.—After discussion it was decided that no delegate be sent to the conference. FINANCE. The Finance Committee reported that the receipts during the past month amounted to £958 16s, and the expenditure to £443 6s 9d. The credit balance after payment of current accounts would be £348 2s 2d.—Adopted, GENERAL. The May r or said that he and Cr Venn had waited on the Prime Minister (Mr G. W. Forbes) during his recent visit to Dunedin on the subject of unemployment. Although they had been cordially' received, they had come away with the impression that they had got nowhere. Still, they were living in hope. it was decided to grant the Kavensbourne Regatta Committee the use of the hall on February 17.

It was decided that the Anzac Day service be held in the hall on the same lines as last year.

Cr Asher referred to the narrow entrance to the railway siding at the Hume Pipe Works, which he described as dangerous in view of the difficulty experienced by drivers of large motor lorries in turning.—Referred to the Works Committee. INSPECTOR’S REPORT.

The inspector reported as follows on the work done in the borough during the past month : The , tar-sealing contracts have been finished, and this work lias kept the men busy keeping it covered during the hot weather. Castle street has been further improved, and this requires only top-dressing and the finishing of the water tables to complete. Clean-ing-up work has been gone on with, besides the usual work with the unemployed. The following work remains to be done: —A stop erected in Ross street; culverts at Sullivan’s, Ascog road, Burkes, Tunnel Hill, Wilson’s, and Ravensbourne; concrete channels on the Main road and the widening of the corner at Sullivan’s. Sixty feet of 9in pipes arc also required for the new road at Moloney’s. The Works Committee recommended that the piping in Ross street be completed as early as possible, and also that the drain from the hall be started without delay. The report was adopted.
