AGED SOLDIER’S DEATH
SIR lAN HAMILTON'S TRIBUTE General Sir lan Hamilton has lost a “ dear old comrade ” by the death at Preston, Lancashire, of James Campbell, aged 78, who was with Sir lan at the taking of Kabul during the Afghan War of 1878-80. The Afghan War was the first of Sir lan Hamilton’s varied experiences on active service. Ho had been in the Army only five years when tho campaign began. He said recently: “Campbell was a private in my old regiment, the Gordons, during the Afghan campaign. He was a good fellow and an excellent soldier. “ The year following tbe close of the Afghan campaign I was at the Battle of Majuba Hill, and Campbell was with me there. I think there arc now only three survivors of Majuba. Many of my old comrades correspond with me, and Campbell was one of them. Ho was a dear old boy, and I am deeply sorry to lose such a very old comrade.”
