RETURNED SOLDIERS' PICNIC
The Port Chalmers branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association held the annual picnic yesterday at the Spit, and it was a pleasant outing. The weather was warm, and the surroundings attractive. A sports programme and surf bathing were very popular. The coppers were boiled on a grassy plot in Aramoana township, where the open-air tea party was much enjoyed. The West Harbour Band played a lilting programme, this being the band’s first engagement since its new conductor (Mr A. Allenby) took charge. The arrangements were carried out under the direction of Mr J. Thorn (chairman), Mr R. F. Montgomery (secretary), and a capable committee. Mr S. F. Lunn represented the Imperial Servicemen’s Association; Mr Ben Ellis, the, South African veterans and the R.S.A.; Staff Sergeant-major M'Kenzie, the Permanent Forces.
