TOURISTS' PARADISE

GERMAN MOTORIST IMPRESSED BY SCENERY “ I have travelled through the North Island and a great deal of the South Island, and 1 can say that 1 have never seen such a collection of beautiful places,” said Dr R. Asmis, German Consul iu Australia, New Zealand, and the South Sea Islands, just before leaving Dunedin on Saturday for Waimate, Hokitika, Nelson, and one or two North Island towns. Dr Asmis, who is stationed at Sydney, is at present conducting a motoring trip of this country, accompanied by Mrs Asmis, and is greatly impressed by the nature and beauty of the scenery here, describing what he had already seen as “ marvellous.” In Dr Asmis’s opinion, New Zealand presents a wonderful opportunity to the tourist. Not only was the visitor rewarded by the scenery, he said, but the accommodation at the hotels was excellent, and the people one met were so friendly. Speaking of his journey last week from Lumsden, through Gore, to Dunedin, he said that the surrounding country reminded him very much of England; the ground was cultivated, and sheep and cattle were being reared. ‘‘ It gives the impression that the country is in a very happy position,” he remarked. For a country with such a small population, New Zealand had extremely good roads. It was a pleasure to drive a car on them, and the motorist was really well served iu this matter. Driving was made all the easier by the fact that hundreds of directions and warning signposts were erected on the roads These were a big help to the motorist, and the different motor clubs were to be thanked for their erection.
