Total deaths ,260; injured and admitted to hospitals 537. —February 4. 1615.—Porta, inventor of camera ofo. scura, died at Naples. _ 1875.—Colony of Fiji instituted. 1895.—China fleet destroyed at Wei-Hai-Wei. 1900.—Highland brigade under General Hector M'Donald, occupied Koodesberg. 1904.—H.M.5. New Zealand launched at Portsmouth. 1912.—China became a republic. 1917.—H0n. jR. M‘Nab died. After being idle in Auckland harbour for nearly two years, the Union Company’s island steamer Tofua has been sold to Japanese buyers. The vessel is to go to Japan to be dismantled for scrap metal.
