THE CEANOTHUS
The ceanotliua have long been in the front rank of flowering shrubs, and are deservedly popular, being elegant, rapid in growth, and beautiful in bloom. Some attain moderate dimensions, while others are dwarf bushes with rounded form. All varieties have proved fairly hardy and useful, flower--mg freely and showing considerable : beauty of foliage. The Pacific slopes ; of North America is the home of these j shrubs, and in cultivation they do best when marked by the mid-day sun. If ■ well hardened they will grow with j vigour and defy frosts. All the species i are attractive. There arc one or two that give better results when allotted wall space, Ceanothus gloire de Versailles is one of the best for the open border and extends its flowering season well into the autumn. Ceanothii/s Veitchianus is always a favourite, being smothered in late spring with clus--1 ters of charming bine flowers. Azurens ; prefers a wall with a southerly aspect, ! where it produces masses of lovely pale i blue flowers, while C. Itigidus is a ' variety with deep blue blooms. There are also pale pink varieties and some almost white. Kxtra plants may be had by layering or by striking cuttings in autumn iMauawatu Daily Times').
