'TOUGH STUFF'
1 Tough Stuff ’ is by W. Townend (Herbert Jenkins); Mr Townend has written some first-rate sea stories, notably ‘ We Sailors ’ and ‘ The Ship in the” Swamp.’ It is quite evident that the author writes from first-hand knowledge of the comedies and tragedies of the sea and of the men who go down to the sea in ships. ‘ Tough Stuff ’ is really a series of short stories, but in each the central figure is Captain Crupper, hard-bitten but kind-hearted skipper of a tramp steamer. With him we meet all sorts and conditions of men, and with him we join in waterfront brawls or suffer the. hardship and privation inseparable from the sailor’s life. Captain Crupper is no sentimentalist, but he is always ready to take the side of the distressed provided his or her case is a good one, and this brings him into strange adventures. It is a really entertaining book.
