VENUE WINS PRINCIPAL RAGE The we;ither was very hot for the Tapanui Jockey Club’s Meeting, and there was an excellent crowd at the annual races. The course, which has been improved since last season, was in good order, and times were unusually fast. The racing, though marred hy inipiiries after the first two events, was more interesting than usual, and several good finishes were witnessed. Five first favourites prevailed, but only two of them were at odds-on prices. Mr Quinn’s starting left a good deal to he desired, ‘but ho was hampered by a very primitive barrier. Ballasalla and Lucky Locket were the first out. and after a furlong had been covered M‘Nah ran up alongside Ballasalla. They raced together well clear of the others round the far turn, then Ballasalla appeared to stop, and M'Nab went on to win comfortably by three lengths from Conca d’Oro, who beat Silver'lssue by a length and a-half. Lucky Locket and Southern Princess were next. Time, 1m in 15 1-osec. An inquiry was held into an alleged interference by the winner to Ballasalla at the end of three furlongs. Enwood broke a good line first, but almost immediately gave wav to Black Boa and Profit and Loss, 'ibis pair led Emvood round the far turn, and then Black Boa gave way. and Shock and Enwood followed Profit and Loss into the straight. Sunny Southland led Single Lee and Lucky Lee along the back, and approaching the home turn Single Lee took charge. He stayed on two lengths. Turning for home M'Nab was half a length in front of Lochlaggan, with Miss Redowa next. In a great finish Lochlaggan bent M'Nab b' a neck, with Miss Redowa three-parts of a length off third.
