SHEEP OWNERS CONCERNED [Special to the ‘ Star.’] CHRISTCHURCH, February 1. Statements from high country runholders in both North and South Canterbury that keas have been responsible for heavy losses of sheep during the season were received at a meeting of the executive of the Canterbury Sheep Owners’ Union yesterday. Approximately 2 per cent, of the wethers brought in on one high North Canterbury run had received serious injury from keas, while the wethers shorn on this block were approximately 1,000 fewer than those turned out in the autumn, many being found in various stages of injury as a result of attacks, ft was stated that since there were one million fewer sheep in New Zealand now as compared with last year, the Government should encourage local bodies to reinstate the subsidy to en- ■ murage the destruction of keas which was withdrawn a few years ago. The secretary was authorised to communicate with the Minister and other sheep owners’ unions in the South Island.
