Mrs Hugh Speight and her small daughter have returned from Timaru, where they have had a bungalow for the past five weeks close to the beach. Mr Speight spent ,a few days with them in Timaru prior to their all returning home. ■'

Dunedin ■ -how possesses, in the person of Miss Bertlni'Kawlinson, L.A.8., the' youngest bachelor of music in New Zealand. She has just received official notice of the success of her composition, ‘ St. Cecilia,’ an opera for soloists, chorus, and full orchestra. This work, which experts have described as “ a most beautiful composition,” will bo performed in the chief centres of New Zealand in due course. Dr Galway, tinder whom Miss Rawlinson studied at Otago University, is to arrange for these presentations.

Mr- and Mrs W. J. Bardsley, who ore enjoying an extensive tour of the North Island, are at present visiting New Plymouth, prior to continuing their journey south. Mrs A. J). On Monday evening, January 22, a few friends paid a surprise visit to Mr and Mrs A. WiSmesky at their residence, Playfair street, Caversham, on the occasion of their golden wedding. A very pleasant evening was spent. After supper a beautiful wedding cake was cut l),v the bride of fifty years ago, and Mr A. F, Moorhead, in a happy speech, proposed the toast of the bride and bridegroom, and this was drunk with musical honours. The toast ot the absent members of the family was also proposed.
