BEACH PATROL

NECESSITY FOR CONTINUED SERVICE

The arrangements entered into by the St. Glair Improvement Association with the St. Clair Surf Life Saving Club, whereby the public was assured of the St. Clair Beach being patrolled by a competent pa.trol during lime, will, ■terminate next week -with the school holidays. The excellent work done by the patrol, Mr Devlin, who has been most assiduous in watching the bathers, has been freely commented upon bv the public, and it is a fact that parents who hitherto would not allow their children to go on to the beach and into the water unaccompanied are now allowing their children -to go bathing knowing that they are now under proper supervision. The patrol, by means of a whistle, keeps the children between the flags, and thus they are under his immediate eye. Although the school holidays end next week, one looks to February for bathing weather, and it would seem essential that arrangements should be made to retain the services of the patrol for the smaller children during school hours and also the school children during the latter part of the afternoon until the end of the season, which might be until the end of March. The'St. Clair Improvement Association is to be congratulated on taking the initiative in making arrangements for a patrol during the holidays, and knowing that the association’s funds arc limited, of the beach are asking that something further should be done in the matter. It has been stated that, the City Council should make .some move to protect the bathing public, and emulate what lias already been done by the local association." This question has been raised year after year, and now that a start has been made it is felt that it is an essential service that cannot now be stopped. The St. Clair beach has fortunately been free from mishaps this summer, and it is in the bone that the remainder of the season will be equally free'from accident that the retention of the services of the patrol should be decked upon, especially when there is little doubt f-et sniffiTUp arrangements conM be in;"'” "-ith the Life Saving Club to effect this.
