WEST INDIES GOLD
The gold which Columbus found in Ike West Indies, yellow -metal pitked up by the Indians fro mthe auriferous sands of rivers, is being rediscovered on a greater scale by geologists. I’hey are also finding a metal that Colunbus never beard of, manganese, which 1 promises to be even more valuable tc the United States than the gold depisits. These new metal explorations were made in Puerto Rico by the conmittee on mineral resources, , a geological commission 1 appointed by Gqvtrnqr Beverley. One of the geologists is Professor Howard A. Meyerhoif, of Smith College, who has a copy o! the formal findings. “ Moderate quantities of gold.” this report states, “ have been obtained in Puerto Rico since its settlement yet the persistent annual production Indicates that the supply is by no neans exhaused. ;
“ The long history of placer production in the district extending from Barrio Negros to Naranjitosuggest a primary gold source of possibly fionomic* importance. ! “ Along Bios MaviJla. Corozol.j Negro, Naranjito. and Cibuco then are more than eighteen miles of airilerous valley-bottom alluvium. Conjcrva tive estimates, based in part upon tests, indicate that this material contains nearly £BOO.OOO worth of igold. unequally distributed, much of vhich can be recovered with skilful development.” | Most of the American suppy of manganese comes from points is remote as Brazil, the Gold Coast. t)e Soviet Republic of Georgia, and D'ltish India. The geological report ftates that Puerto Rico already has ap approximate annual production 0f|2.000 tons of manganese ore. obtained; from a deposit near Junaa Diaz. j
