FIGHT WITH LEOPARD
TRANSVAAL FARMERS DRAMATIC' ENCOUNTER. PRETORIA, January 17. A Transvaal farmer who fought a wounded leopard with his hands is now lying in the Pretoria General Hospital suffering from terrible wounds on the face and body. When a calf was killed on the farm run by Martinus Loots and his two brothers they set out on the trail of the -leopard, whoso spoor Was seen around the dead calf. Following the trail through the bush Martinus Loots, came suddenly upoji the leopard crouched less than ten yards away. He .fired, but ■ only wounded the animal with- small- shot, whereupon the leopard sprang upon ,lum, mauling his body, arms, and legs, and biting his face., ! Loots’s erder brother rushed up and pulled the leopard off by its . ears, sp that the third brother could get in a shot. The beast turned and clawed the face and head of the second brother, tearing off an ear, and then sprang upon the elder brother. Using their guns as chibs the brothers finally forced the leopard to retreat, but they were too wea!k from loss of blood to follow it.
