SAILING CHAMPIONSHIPS

DISCUSSED BY YACHT ASSOCIATION ' The final arrangements for the hokling'of the New Zealand 12ft Gin Z class championship were discussed at a meeting ot the Otago Yacht and Motor Boat Association last night. Mr A. W. Hazlewood (president) was in . the. chair, and the other delegates present were Messrs W. 0. Martin, J. Smail, C. Smith, A. Challis, D. Jenkins, T. Brooks, W. Webber, and A. Burt. ; The Secretary.of the Wellington Provincial Yacht and Motor Boat Association wrote stating that two Z class boats would be despatched on J auuary 19' and should reach Dunedin by Sunday. He also intimated that three delegates would represent Wellington, Plimmerton, and Paramatta, and asked for .' accommodation. three crews wished to reach Dunedin On Saturday. The Waimakariri Power Boat Club advised the association that its crew and delegate would arrive in Dunedin on the morning of January 22. The selection of H. Gough- (skipper) and C. Jackson (for’ard hand) to represent the club was reported by the Invercargill Boating Club. The Colleen would reach Dunedin on January 22. The Paremata Boating Club advised the association that it would, be represented by J. Coleman (skipper) and J. Nolan (for’ard hand). The Port Chalmers Yacht and Motor Boat'Club intimated that A. M‘Cortnack (skipper) and P. Ward (for’ard hand) would represent the club. ; The, Canterbury Yacht and Motor Boat Club advised that its representatives would be R. Hendry (skipper) and ,S. Sillars (for’ard hand). Mr Magnus Smith would be the delegate. The crew could also provide one boat. The'Otago crew in the Z class championship, E. Walker and ‘L. Miller, Were called before .the meeting, and the chairman expressed the good wishes of the association. He was sure that they would do their best in tin* contest. The crew was to give a fair showing, and whether it won or lost would be immaterial, as long as it played the game. The Sanders Cup crew—l. M'Grath, J. M'Laren, R. Kennedy, E. Cuthbert —also attended, and were introduced to the delegates. On behalf of the association the Chairman congratulated them on being selected to represent the province. They must remember to always play the game, and meet all difficulties in the best spirit possible. Mr Smail, one of the selectors, said that the Selectors had an easy task to select the crew this year. From the way the crew had been performing it should stand a good chance of bringing back the cup. The main thing to remember was that it must pull together. Only one member of the crew had not had experience in a contest previously, but he would learn a great deal at Lyttelton. Mr Webber urged the crew to approach its task in the right sporting spirit and offer no excuses if it did not win. Mr ■ Brookes congratulated the crew on being selected, and the Sailing Committee on its selection. Most of thecrew had had previous experience, while the skipper had “ been through the mill.” A man learned a great deal by sailing in these contests, and the crew should remember that they were sporting events, and should be treated as such. The details of billeting and entertaining the crows were discussed. An official welcome is to be extended by the Mayor (Rev. E. T. Cox) at the Town Hall On Tuesday evening, and the Z class conference will meet immediately afterwards. The first race is to be sailed on Wed nesday at a time to be arranged at the conference. Mr I. M'Grath was appointed manager of the Z class crew, and Mr J, Cormack was appointed to repair any boats which might be damaged. Messrs Smail, -Martin, Challis, and Smith were elected a Course Committee to lay off suitable courses and advise the conference.
