STEADY INCREASE LLOYD'S QUARTERLY RETURNS Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, January 16 ; The total tonnage under construction in British shipyards shows a further steady increase. According to Lloyd’s quarterly returns for the three months ended December 31, the total construe-, tion at that date was 331,541 tons, which is 106,044 tons greater compared with the corresponding date of the previous year. The tonnage under construction abroad was 425,736, about 27,000 tons less than the work in hand on September 30, and the lowest recorded for abroad since 1909. The five leading countries abroad are:— Japan 106,760 France ... ... ... 90,656 Sweden ... 64,640 Holland 40,540 Spain 35,724 Nineteen oil tankers were under construction, the total being 117,608 tons, 31,026 tons of which were being built in Great Britain and Ireland, 41,100 in Sweden, and 19,200 in Japan. British construction included motor ship tonnage of 112,276, while the motor ship tonnage abroad amounts to 305,978 tons, and exceeded the steamer tonnage by 188,490 tons.
