PREPARING FOR TRENTHAM SEMI-FINAL GALLOPS ON THE PLOUGH [Per United Press Association.] •WELLINGTON,'January 18. ■ There was perfect weather at Trentham this morning for tho. semi-final gallops of horses engaged at Wellington Meeting. The plough, which had been watered overnight, was exclusively used, and it became faster as the hot sun continued to" dry' it. Galloping is therefore given in chronological order. Epigram and Red Sun stepped out to run' a mile and a-quarter shortly after daybreak, and they covered the distance in 2min 9Jscc, the last mile in Imin 44 2-ssec and the last half in 52 2-ssec. .Epigram drew out to a head advantage at the end. Ida Merling beat Pegged Exchange away from the six, but the latter finished two lengths in front in Imin 17 2-ssec, the last half in 52 3-ssec. Normandy ran the last six of seven furlongs comfortably in Imin 19sec. Count Palatine was always just slightly ahead of Grand .)ury through their seven furlongs task in Imin 30sec. The last half-mile took 51&cc. Both these horses look exceedingly well. Hunting Bag, who gallops with a high action on the plough, took Imin 35sec for seven furlongs, \ the last half being run in 55sec. Tutor and Whyte Melville ran down from the three furlongs post in 35|see. From the same post Melisande required 39sec. 7 King March beat King’s Knave by a neck over seven furlongs in Imin 30sec, the last half in 51 l-ssec. Both horses worked well, with the former always being slightly in front. Autopay and Joie de Val ran 1 five furlongs together, the last half being covered in 50 3-sscc. Forestry found Vertigern a poor companion over a mile, and ho ran away from him in the straight to lead the way home by five lengths in 1 Imin 44sec, the last half taking 52sec. Vertigern looks very .fit, but he could not go on the plough, which is deep at present. Secrecy finished three lengths ahead of Roderick Dhuat the end of six furlong in Imin 17£sec, the last half taking 53sec, Lordly Knight went live furlongs, the last half in 49sec. Aroma showed his usual track, brilliance in soundly beating Te Ua over five furlongs in Imin 2 l-ssee, the last half m 49 2-sseo, Lord Val finished four lengths in front of Lackston over half a mile in 48 4-ssec, Bay- Area, a maiden with ample pace, beat This Time by a tick and recorded the best figures for the half-mile. Prior to the interval, Zetes and Pahu were together two lengths clear of Flower at)the end of seven furlongs in Imin Sljsec. The last half-mile took Slseo. High Grader, Impaste, Diatomous, Senior, Courtyard, April Fool, and M'Heath did' easy tasks only. , After the breakfast interval the’first to work were Ventrac, Slippery, and Worship, who finished in that order without much between the first pair after running five furlongs in Imin 2 3-ssec, the last half taking 50sec. Kemal Pasha just beat Mobile over six furlongs in Imin 17sec, the last half being run in 51sec. Dismiss did the best half of the morning in 48sec, but he was making a pronounced noise at the end. Quietly, Cape Fair, and Palm Queen went off together from the seven furlongs peg, but Quietly was soon in front, and she stayed there till a few chains off the post, when Palm Queen swept up to win the trial by a neck in Imin 28 4 : ssec. The last half took 51 2-s.sec. Morbury was a length and a-half too good for Wahroonga over half a mile along the back in 49 2-ssee. First View ran six furlongs in Imin 17sec, the last half in 51 2-5860, The only further scratching is Mother Superior from the Wellington Stakes, but it is understood at T.rentham that Star Artist and Cleaner are two others who will not be meeting their engagements.
