STILL WAITING
THE BEAR OF OAKLAND EQUIPMENT BY AIR The Bear of Oakland is still lying at Victoria wharf ready for her voyage to the frozen south. The barquentine was ready to sail two days ago, but valuable expedition equipment was not to hand. The equipment was brought to New Zealand by the steamer Ashburton, which was due at Auckland to-day. As soon as this is discharged from the vessel’s hold it will be brought to Dunedin by aeroplane and placed aboard the Bear of Oakland.
The waiting time has been spent by the ship’s company in preparing the vessel for the severe buffeting which is expected in the higher latitudes. The rigging has been overhauled and to-day the deck cargo on the fore deck was being secured against the force of the mountainous sas against which every Antarctic expedition ship has to battle on the voyage south.
