In the hours between midnight and 9 a.m. when the wireless operator is oft' duty the robot performs his work with human-like thoroughness and reliability. The robot is an ingenious instrument which is brought into action by connecting the distress signal automatic alarm receiver to'the main aerialy by means of a switch. On a wireless receiver turned to 600 metres the robot disregards the ordinary messages; At anv minute, however, the preliminary call of the S.O.S. signal may be sent, and then the robot comes to life with a clanging of bells. One alarm hell rings over the operator’s bunk, summoning him to the wireless room ; another rings on the bridge, and a third rings in the wireless room. The bells continue to clamour until the operator switches over from the robot to the ship’s main receiver. Robots, or auto alarms, have been fitted in ships in all parts of the world, and more than 100 vessels in Australian waters have been equipped with this life-saving device.
