DOCTOR’S HEROISM

BRAVE DEED IN MINE Every day in the mines of Britain, acts of heroism are performed. This is the story of one of the bravest deeds ever recorded. 'The hero is a doctor. A stone weighing 100 tons fell on the hand of a youth working in North Walbottle Colliery, near Newcastle-on-Tyne. All efforts by his. comrades to release him failed. Dr Hugh Kendal, of Westerhope, Newcastle, was told of the accident. He descended the pit and decided to amputate the youth’s fingers. The 100 tons block of stone threatened to tumble over and crush the doc-: tor at any moment, but he began the operation. Then his surgical instruments broke, so he took a hacksaw, and with that he coolly completed the operation. This heroic story was told to the: Carnegie Hero Fund Trustees when they met at Dunfermline recently. They decided to ask Dr Kendal to choose an award by the fund to the value of £2O.
