IDLE BUILDING
ACQUIRED BY DUNEDIN FIRM MODERNISING SCHEME IN PROGRESS Scenes of great activity are being witnessed at the old New Zealand Hardware Company’s building in Cumberland street. This well-known landmark, after standing empty for some time past, has been acquired by Messrs Stewart, Bell Ltd., and is being modernised and brought up to date to suit the new tenants.
Messrs Stewart, Bell Ltd. will occupy the whole of the ground floor, and for this purpose the contractors are erecting spacious and welllighted offices fronting on to Cumberland street. Portion of the main wall has been removed, and a large window and hew door are being inserted. Provision is also being made for a commodious showroom and for ample storage accommodation. Extra storage space will bo obtained by means of a heavy mezzanine floor along the north wall. Vehicular traffic will be catered for from both Cumberland and Dunbar streets by large cart docks. 'i’he stainvays have been altered, and now provide direct and independent access to the two upper floors. The first floor, which will be occupied by Messrs Eadie Bros. (N.Z.) Ltd., is being fitted with up-to-date office and warehouse accommodation. The top floor will later be subdivided to suit new' tenants. The Love Construction Company Ltd are the general contractors, the architect being Mr Gorton R. Stone.
