CAR MOUNTS FOOTPATH—WOMAN KILLED.. A sensational accident, which o<ycurred in the centre of Gisborne. on Saturday afternoon,-. resulted in. the death or a married woman named Mrs Elizabeth Pitcher,- sixty-two years ■of age. ■ ; ,v ■■ ■ A few weeks ago the Borough Council instituted the; angle parking of motor cars in the main street. - About 5 p.m. on Saturday,- as the footpaths were crowded with shoppers, : Mr Walter Robert Neilson, who had---parked his car, made an attempt-to leave.-• _At that time a bicycle. ,was % leaning; against a verandah post two feet from, the front of Mr Neilson’s carl When Mr Neilson took the. brake .off the car to back out the car slid forward, and he jammed .his foot down harder than usual on the broke, causing his foot to slip off bh to the accelerator. The. car bounded forward, carried away. the verandah post, and the bicycle,, and knocked Mrs Pitched, down. Her injuries proved fatal t^p ; minutes after her admission to -hospital. At the inquest yesterday the medical evidence showed that death was due to a ruptured spleen caused, by injuries from the car,- and the coroner, Mr E; L. Walton, S.M., returned a verdict accordingly. The deceased was one of the pioneers of the district, having resided hero for sixty years. She leaves a husband and one daughter, and si? sons, three of whom reside at Westport. >

CAR PLUNGES INTO STREAM. A DROP OF FORTY FEET. As the result of a motor accident near Johnson,ville two persons are in the hospital—George Kermode .an'd Mrs Emnia Legge. They vfere,driving,in a touring ear, and it is alleged they were forced off the road by another vehicle, which overtook them, causing their car to plunge into a stream 40ft below. Kermode received injuries to his head and left arm, and sustained a fractured pelvis. Mrs Legge is.suffering from severe bruises and abrasions to Tier shoulder and arms. Both were rendered unconscious. They received treatment from Dr Aitken, and were later removed to the hospital.—Wellington Press Association. FOUND DEAD. John Middleraiss, who lived with his sisters at Lawrence, was found with his throat cut yesterday afternoon. He was . single, 65 years of age. An inquest will be held. LEFT EYE INJURED. ; When he was making a steel pin at the Hillside Workshops this morning Wilfred Burt, aged twenty-four,' and residing at 24 Law street, received an injury to his left eye from a piece of flying steel. He was admitted to the hospital at 10.30 for,treatment. CYCLIST UPSET. Frank Thomson, -a 1 single, .man, twenty-eight years / of age, received head injuries when -he fell- from his bicycle near the Savoy on Saturday evening. The cause of the accident, was interference with his front • wheel by the dynamo supplying current to the light. ■■■ • KNOCKED DOWN BY CAR. Pat. Baker, eighteen, years of age, and residing at 37 Prince Albert road, was knocked down by a motor car in front of the Victoira Hotel to-day, and was admitted to the hospital at 12.45 p.m. suffering from concussion, FRACTURED LEG. As a result of falling from his bicycle in Anderson’s Bay road, William Brockie, a single man, twenty-six years of age, residing at 89 Bridgman street, was admitted to the hospital on Saturday afternoon with a fractured leg. D.EATH IN HOSPITAL, The death occurred at the Waipukurau Public Hospital yesterday of John Patsy Burke, aged. 56, who came from Ireland twenty years ago, and was employed at Omakere by a contractor. He had been in a depressed state of health of late, and was found in the hospital bathroom on Saturday afternoon with his throat cut, dying from shock at 9.15 next morning.—Press Association.
