EXPANSION LEAGUE

EXECUTIVE MEETING The monthly meeting of the Executive Committee of the Otago Expansion League was held on Tuesday evening, the president (Mr J. J. Marlow) occupying the chair. Tlkj other members were:—Messrs G. J. Errington, It. B. Black, J. L. Passmore, G. Newpy, W. J. Winefield, S. B. Crawford, A. It. Ellis, H. M. Mac'kay, T. Harridge, J. Jackson Purdie, and A. Smiley. Reports wore tendered for discussion. In connection with the * Passion Play ’ to bo given in Dunedin, the committee announced that it had looked into the matter and thought that it was not advisable to stage so difficult a production. As a substitute is proposed a miracle play which it was considered would be more within the scope of local talpnl. In connection with the question of the Haast Pass road, correspondence was read from settlers in the back country requesting the league’s assistance in securing the removal of the blockon the Makarora road. It was pointed out that settlers at the upper end of the lake were cut off from all communication except by weekly launch service, which was altogether inadequate for their present needs. The league had already taken action in connection with this matter, and roiprosensations had been made to the authorities in connection with the stoppage of traffic. It was resolved that the committee place the matter again before the authorities, whoso letters acknowledging the previous requests were read, and press for an early and effective attempt upon the lieavy slips which are stopping all traffic, and also to notify the settlors and request them to do all they can from their end. Correspondence was received from the Minister of Agriculture iu connection with the request of tho Fruitgrowers’ Association for special consideration in connection with the recent frost damage to Central Otago orchards. The president reported that lie had attended a conference called to meet the orchardists from the Central Otago district, and there the amount of damage done was explained. The fir nitgrowers thought the Government would favourably consider granting a bonus on the loss suffered by frost. Tho president said that, the claim was a fair ami reasonable one for the fruitgrowers to make, and the secretary was instructed to join with the other bodies in making a joint representation on behalf of the orchardists. A letter from tho Minister was the outcome, and ho bad been pleased to note that favourable consideration had been promised (o the petition forwarded. The action of tho president was approved. Various complaints were received regarding the condition of live Lindis Pass road, especially the portion four miles behind the Lindis Tea Booms. Users of the road bad stated that this section was dangerous and that there was grave risk of a serious accident unless some action was taken. It was resolved to communicate with live Highways Board pointing out the complaints that bad been received and requesting that consideration might be given to this section of the Pass road.
