CO-OPERATIVE MARKET FOR DUNEDIN ENTERPRISING LOCAL SYNDICATE “ The public will he able to buy almost anything—from a needle to an anchor at The Civic,” said Mr W. Mowbra v, organising manager for a syndicate of Dunedin business men who are preparing to open a household market in Filleul street in a building formerly used as a boot factory by M'Kinlay and Sons, to a ‘ Star ’ reporter this morning- . • X “Marketing is not a new experiment —it is as old as time—but in England, on the Continent, and nearer home, in Australia, marketing is the big feature to-day,” said Mr Mowbray. “ The Civic is being promoted to provide under one roof household requirements at bed-rock prices, and all purchases made to be delivered in a bag or suit case to any home in the city for a small sum. The Civic is being designed for the public’s convenience. There are to be no monopolies, so that the public will have a wide choice of goods,” he said. At the present time, carpenters and other tradesmen, under the supervision of Messrs G. Simpson and, Co., are reconstructing the whole of the interior of this solid concrete building, which up till recently housed the plant of one of the largest boot manufacturers in Now Zealand. Stalls are being erected on both .sides of the building, and a wide passage-way will lead from Filleul street into York place, and the various stalls are to be under separate management under a daily tenancy to the syndicate. Arrangements are to be made not only for the delivery of parcels to homes in the city, but to trains and buses, with the idea of eliminating the task of collecting parcels from various parts of the city. It is claimed by the management of the venture that as the result of the reduced overhead charges vendors will have a distinct selling advantage, and already all the stalls have been snapped up. It is anticipated that the market will be open to the public within a fortnight. Further innovations will he introduced to the market from time to time should tho venture appeal to the public.
