With £2,000 as its objective, the Palmerston North queen carnival campaign closed last night with £1,953 raised for the purpose of the relief of distress in the city and district. There were five queen candidates, the farmers’ queen (Miss Joan Russell) winning handsomely. Racehorses do not eat the day. before the race, according to a magazine article.
