“HAS DONE RIGHT"
CLOSING DF TRAINING COLLEGES MR WALLACE SUPPORTS MINISTER “ I am satisfied that the Minister has done the right thing,” stated Mr. James Wallace, chairman of the Otago Education Board, when he was interviewed bv the ‘ Star ’ to-day on the subject of the closing of the Auckland Training CollegeNow that the Minister had closed the four training colleges in New Zealand,he should take into consideration the placing of the training of teachers under the four university colleges, said Mr Wallace. He thought that the Minister would find that the universities were quite prepared to _ meet him* Already two schemes—by Victoria College and by Otago University and the Otago Education Board—had been propounded to the Minister. “ The day of separate training colleges is over,” said Mr Wallace- “ Though we fought hard here for the retention of the Dunedin college, wa were quits satisfied to let it go provided the training was provided at the University, with the Professor of Education as the academic head and with; a practical teacher as first assistant.” “ A wicked waste of money,” was Mr| Wallace’s comment on the use of tha staff of the Christchurch college. Ha presumed that the same use would ba made of the Auckland, college staff.
