THE PLAY-OFF MOSS IN THE LEAD [Peu United Pkess Association.] AUCKLAND. October 16. The play-off between 15. J. Moss i Auckland) and 16. S. Douglas (13aliiiacewcu) for the- New Zealand open championship did not produce any sparkling play this morning. Moss played very soundly, and when eighteen holes had been completed this morning had a useful lead of four strokes, his card being 74 against 78. There was a. stiff southerly blowing and the course provided a better test of golf to-day than last week. Douglas went astray with his first too shot and Moss was two strokes to the good. There was no change till the fifth, where Douglas missed a sis footer, and Moss increased his lead to 3. Moss had a life at the tenth, when the ball appeared certain to roll into trouble, but it rolled hack to the edge of the green and rested pin high. Douglas took 5 and Moss increased his lead to 4. The remaining holes were halved. Douglas had a chance to regain a stroke on the last green, where both were on the terrace below the pin with their seconds. Moss, playing first, was still short of a hole after two putts and took 5. Douglas made exactly the same error, however, and also took 5. Moss was home in 37 and Douglas in 33.
