COUNTERFEITING!

APPARATUS 1H KEW HOUSE POLICE OBTAIN COINS AND PLANT ALLEGED CONFESSION BY ARRESTED MAN Apparatus for the manufacture of counterfeit coins and a number of spurious florins were obtained by the police yesterday morning, when a house at Kew was raided by detectives. The occupant of the house, Robert Stanley M'Causland, was arrested, and later made a statement to the police admitting the manufacture of spurious coins, according to statements made in the Police Court to-day, when, before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M., M'Causland was charged that, on or about September 17, he made counterfeit coins (twelve florins) with intent to make them resemble or pass for current silvei coin.

Chief-detective Young’s application for a remand for one week was granted Bail was applied for by Mr 0. Stevens who appeared for accused, who, ho said, was a relief worker. It would be difficult for him to get sureties for a large amount. For some considerable time past quite a number of counterfeit coins had been circulated in Dunedin, said Mr Young Inquiries were made by Detective Gibson. As a result a party of detectives yesterday morning visited the accused’s house. Making a search, they found a number of florins, and also for manufacturing the coins. The charge was one on which accused was liable to imprisonment for life. Accused had also made a statement admitting that he had manufactured nnnnterfeit coins, stated Mr Young. “It is quite true that accused had made a full and frank statement to the police, and also how ho came to manufacture these coins,” said Mr Stevens. “ But there can be no evidence that any of these were uttered.”

Mr Young: Mr Stevens does not know what evidence we have. Mr Stevens said M'Causland was a married man, with seven children, the ages ranging from seventeen to one and a-half years. The police would have to admit that the man and his fa.n ; y had been living in circumstances almost of destitution. The police case could not be prejudiced in any way if bail were granted. Bail was refused.
