SCOTTISH SOCIETY'S SOCIAL

The monthly social of the Scottish Society of Dunedin was well attended on Saturday evening at the Victoria Hall, and the chair was taken by the President (Mr C. Munro), who was piped to his place on the platform by the official piper (Mr Norman MacPhcrson). The President, in his welcome to the visitors and members, mentioned that the society was pleased to welcome a visitor from H.M.A.S. Australia, in the person of Mr Jock Campbell, a native of Helensburgh, Scotland. It was hoped that two members of the society—Mrs Dpif (com vener of the Ladies’ Committee) and Mr Angus MacAskill (of the Management Committee)—at present inmates of the Public Hospital, would soon be restored to health. The evening was an extended one in the form of a tartan nicht,. music being supplied by Mrs A. Howie at the piano, and Mr David Master-ton at the violin, whilst supper was dispensed by the members of the Ladies Social Committee, under the direction of Mrs Flett. Miss Audrey llamsay gave a pleasing rendition in character of ‘ Caller Herrin’,’ Miss Tess O’Neill played two selections on the violin, ‘ The Auld Scots Sangs ’ and 1 Annie Laurie.’ The duets, ‘My Ain wee House ’ and ‘ Wert Thou m the Cauld Blast? ’ were sung by Mrs M'Kay and Mr George Jones. Mrs Rutherford, for one of her numbers, sang ‘ Merry England and You,' a song composed by Mr David Mooney, of Dunedin, and'responded to an encore with ‘ Caledonia.’ The national dances were given by Miss Margaret MacMillan (seann truibhais), Misses M. Matheson, and M. Harris (Highland fling), and Miss Jean Brown (sword dance). The piping was provided by Mr N. MaePherson, assisted by the president, who also piped for the eightsomo reel. The veteran, Mr Dan Bruce, answered the call for a pipe selection, which was well received. Mr W. P. Smith acted as M.C., and- the Monte Carlo prizes, presented by the Rialto Tea Rooms, were won by Mr and Mrs J. Stewart. Members were reminded of the St. Andrew’s celebration, taking place in Noveriihcr on the due date.
