KINGSTON-QUEENSTOWN ROAD

LAKE COUNTY COUNCIL URGES COMPLETION BOARD'S ATTITUDE TO STEAMER SERVICE Following on a notice of motion the Lake County Council at its meeting on Tuesday resolved that its previous resolution that the steamer service on Lake Wakatipu bo improved before the road was completed be rescinded, and a further resolution was passed unanimously that the Government be urged to complete the Kingston-Quoenstown road, conditional on its declaration as a main highway when completed (says the ‘Southland News’). Advice to this effect is contained in a letter received by the secretary of the Southland League (Mr J. S. Dick) from the clerk of the Lake County Council (Mr A. F. Griffin). The letter also states that the council had before it for consideration a letter from the Railway Board wherein it was definitely stated that the board was not prepared to consider that the lake service needed improvement, the board holding the view that the present service was quite adequate. In view of this information the resolution mentioned was passed, the text of it being “ that representations bo made immediately to the Government and to the .Main Highways Board for the early

complotion of the Kingston-Queeiistown road, conditional on tho road being deelardfl a main highway on its completion.” , . . The league’s, communication on the possibility of tho declaration of such road as a highway was much appreciated, states the county clerk’s letter, and as the Alain Highways Board had a letter from the league on the subject tho council’s efforts would not be covering new ground. “ I am writing to the board in an endeavour to obtain something in the nature of a definite promise that the road will be declared a highway,” states Mr Griffin, “ and if there is any possibility of the league’s assistance it would bo welcomed.” The council, after giving the matter careful consideration, also resolved to support tho petitioners in their request to the Government for the construction of a road from Glcnorchy to Queenstown, and in this matter also the league’s support would bo appreciated.
