SPORTING GALA

FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION'S EFFORT INTERESTING DAY AT THE CALEDONIAN As a final effort in support of the sports queen candidature a gala was held fay the Otago Football Association on tho Caledonian Ground on Saturday afternoon, and the funds benefited by an amount exceeding £2O. The main attractions were tho Soccer and hockey matches between teams representing Otago and H.M.A.S. Australia. The Navy won the hockey match, but they were decisively beaten by a strong and fully representative eleven at Soccer. Additional attractions were athletic races and wrestling bouts on the lawn. The gala was efficiently organised, and all events were run off according to time-table. BRIGHT SOCCER. In tho Soccer match tho teams were: H.M.A.S. Australia. Stoker Hill; A.B. Ellison, Leading Signaller Cockburn; Stoker Barnard, A. B. Joseph, Stoker Anderson; Stoker Comersky, A.B. Turner, Stoker Samway, Leading Seaman Down, Leading Stoker Twiss. Otago. Wills; Taylor, Bayne; M'Farlane Patton, Baird; Duncan, Chapman, Hooper, Davidson, Skinner. Otago settled down quickly, and Duncan and Chapman combined well. Chapman turned a fast one to the mouth, the goalie tipping clear. The corner was without result. When the Navy attacked Taylor misfielded and Twiss cut in to score a fine goal. H. Australia 1, Otago 0. A heavy attack was made by Otago, and the bounce on a long kick beat the goalie. Davidson was handy, and he found the net. H.M.A.S. Australia I, Otago 1. Tho Navy’s right wing was troublesome to Otago, but they were held out. Tho Otago right wing and inside forward were also working well, and a transfer across field to Davidson found tho goalie saving smartly. Then Hooper came through, transferred to Skinner, and moved up to take the return pass. The centre shot with a rising effort, the ball going beyond the goalie’s reach. Otago 2, H.M.A.S. Australia 1.

The piny of Comersky on the right wing Was frequently applauded. The winger made a perfect cross to goal, and Otago were hard pressed to defend. After Chapman had placed Otago on attack the visitors broke away and Turner shot wide. Then Twiss passed to Down, who cut in and shot. The ball hit the cross-bar, but the inside forwards were not up to take advantage. A minute later the inside left again passed across the Otago goal mouth, the opportunity not being accepted. The Navy pressed and Down shot. Wills fell to stop it, but the ball escaped him and Stanway rushed in to score the equalising goal, and the spell ended: Otago 2, H.M.A.S. Australia 2.

Shortly after the resumption Otago obtained a corner kick, with which Cooper connected for a scoring header. Otago 3, H.M.A.S. Australia 2. Otago attacked, and, maintaining the pressure, Duncan crossed. Davidson trapped and shot, the goalie fumbling and letting the ball through. Otago 4, H.M.A.S. Australia 2. The Navy could not penetrate Otago’s defence. Down and Stanway had exchanged positions. The home team had the better of the play till Chapman passed to Duncan, the ball being sent infield to Hooper, who scored with a first-timer. Otago 5, H.M.A.S. Australia 2.

Tho visitors were penalised. The goalie fielded tho first kick but Chapman gathered tho punch-out to score with a rising shot. Otago 6, H.M.A.S. Australia 2. Otago were still attacking when time was called, with the scores:— Otago 6 .H.M.A.S. Australia 2 Mr W. P. Smith was the referee. NAVY WIN HOCKEY. Taking command in the second spell, H.M.A.S. Australia beat Otago at hockey fay 4 goals to 2. The display by the sailors was capital, the play across field frequently, leaving Otago standing. The teams were:— H.M.A.S. Australia.—Smith, Hatherall, Travis, VoeJker, Penny, Reowin, Baldwin, Brayshaw, Padley, Nicholson, Beck. Otago.—R, Twose, P. Allen, F. Brcbner, Guest, L. Gurr, R. Bond, R. Walton. E. Densem, W. Hardcastle, Corkwell, A. Thomson. Otago attacked at the opening whistle, and immediately took play to the Navy’s territory, whore Corkwoll scored. Otago 1, Navy 0. The sailors then began to settle down and during the next few minutes the play swung from end to end of tho field, neither side gaining any great advantage. Otago then attacked again, and the ball was Sent up the right wing to Walton, who swung in a great centre right for the goal-mouth, where Hardcastle intercepted tho ball in midair and scored with a fine effort. Otago 2, Navy 0. ... Otago then set up a series of hot attacks, but Smith, the Navy goalie, was playing a good game- and saved well on several occasions. Tho Australians assumed the offensive, and after they had been around Otago’s circle for some time Nicholson scored with a good shot. Otago, 2, Navy 1. Otago then pressed again and looked very like scoring, but the Navy goalie was safe, and the sailors were soon away again, taking tho play to Otago’s circle, where a shot was well saved b\ Twose. The ball was returned swiftly and struck tho cross-bar, but in the resultant play Twose was drawn from tho goal cleverly for Brayshaw to score the Navy’s second goal. Otago 2, Navy Otago did most of the attacking at the beginning of the second spell, and at times looked dangerous, but they were unable to finish off their movements. The Navy took up tho attack, and soon the play was centred around tho home team’s circle, but the position was relieved, and up and down play followed. The sailors were soon attacking again, however, and the determined nature of their onslaught gave the Otago players some anxious moments, Twose, tho home team’s goalie, saving well several times. The Australians were not to be kept out, Iwwever, and after a scramble right in the goal mouth Padley pushed the ball through. Navy 3, Otago 2. Not long afterwards Padley scored again, and the game ended : H.M.A.S. Australia 4 Otago 0 Messrs W. M'Queen and C. Sew Hoy were the referees. ATHLETICS.
