PLUNKET SOCIETY

MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the committee of the above society was held in the Plunket rooms, Queen’s Building, Princes street, on Friday. Present: Mrs Jos. M'George. (in the chair), Lady Allen, Lady Sidcy, Mesdames G. Gallaway, Taverner, Williams, W. Wilson, Hanan, D. Reid, Mandeno, Barnett, Cairney, Cunningharae, Cleghorn, Watson, J. C. M'George, N. Speight, J. M. Paterson, Arundel, Gillon, and Wilson (Mosgiel), Miss Nina Reid, and the secretary. Before commencing the business of tho meeting, Mrs M'Georgo (president) made feeling reference to the death of Mrs J. A. Johnstone, who, for over thirteen years, had been president of the Dunedin Branch and of the Dominion Council of the society. Mrs M'George said that the memory of Mrs Johnstone’s loyal devotion to and generous support of the work, her kind consideration for all, and her great sympathy towards those who were in trouble would ever remain as an incentive and an inspiration to all who had been associated with her, and who were left to carry on the work to which she had given such whole-hearted and self-sacrificing service. The members of committee expressed their pleasure that Mrs Arundel was so far restored to health that she was able to be present at the meeting. It was arranged that Mesdames J. M. Gallaway and A. Barnett, in conjunction with the president and another member of the executive, be the Visiting Committee , to the Karitane-Harris .Hospital on the afternoon of Wednesday. September 27. and that Mesdames Williams and J. M. _ Paterson be associated with the president and a_member of tho executive as tho Visiting Committee on Thursday, October 19. Details were discussed in connection with the ' Reveille,’ which' is being produced by Mr W. Lints, under the ausnices of the society, and. will open m His Majesty’s Theatre on Saturday next. As a matinee could not bo arranged for, it was decided to run tho ‘ Reveille ’ for nine nights, and on Monday, October 2, to grant special concessions for school children attending in groups of not less,than twenty. Final arrangements were made in connection with tho society’s annual “ Daffodil Day ” street sale and collection. which will thiVycar be held on Friday. October 6. The stalls and stallholders will be as under:— Princes street (opposite Brown. Ewing’s)—Miss N, Reid and Mesdames Solomon, Brown, and N, Speight. Corner Princes street and Dowling street (A.M.P. Buildings), Mrs J, C. M'George. Corner Princes street and Rattray street (at Bank of N.Z.) —Mesdames G., Gallaway, J. M. Gallaway, G. R. Ritchie, W. Wilson, Black, and A. Barnett. Corner south end Octagon and Princes street (opposite Hallenstein Bros.) —Mesdames Williams, Cox, Cairney and Paterson. Corner Moray place and George street (at Moray Place Post Office) —Mesdames Mandeno, J. A. Hanan, Jas. Begg, A. Begg, Taverner, and Miss Joachim. Corner Princes street and Moray place (at City Hotel) —Mesdames Cunninghame, Watson, Cleghorn, and D, Reid. A donation of cushions for tho committee room in the society’s new premises in the Queen’s Building was received from the members of the Furnishing Committee and others. Mrs M‘Kenney and Mrs Whittleston (Palmertson) were appointed to the committee as the representatives of the Palmerston suh-branch. The Matron of the Karitane-Harris Hospital, Anderson’s Bay, reported as fallows for the month muled August 31:—Patients admitted—mothers 14, babies 19; patients discharged—mothers 16, babies 19; largest number in residence on any one day—mothers 5, babies 22. Patients were admitted from the following districts—Mosgiel. Balclntha, Central Otago, Oamarn,' and Dunedin and suburbs. Visitors for tho month numbered 254. During August the third term of Plunket trainees for 1933 came into residence, there being the usual number in class (20). Tho Plmuket nurses for North and Central, Dunedin districts reported for the month:—Babies on the list, 798; older children on the list, 306; new cases for tho month (babies only), 39; babies breast-led (including partly), new cases 33; visits paid to homes, 500; visits paid to Plunket rooms—Stuart street, mothers 384, babies 327, older children 60; Roslyn, mothers 145, babies 127, older children 30; Mornington, mothers 107, babies 96, older children 20; North-east Valley, mothers 81, babies 172, older children. 31; Macnndrew Bay, mothers 43, babies 38. older children 6. The Plunket nurse for South Dunedin district reported for the mouth: —Babies on the list, 382; older children on tho list, 36; new cases for the month (babies only), 17; babies breast-fed (in-

eluding partly), new cases, 15; visits paid to homes, 256; visits paid to Plunket rooms, 315 King Edward street, .South Dunedin—mothers 270, babies 251, older children 42.
