AUSTRALIAN RECORD-BREAKER
BARWICK BUSY . “ Bill Barwick continues to break Australian records at Hobart with a regularity which is becoming monotonous, his latest being his successful attack on the Australian two miles record on September 2. He is in brilliant form, and since his return from the Olympic Games at Los Angeles, has improved 100 per cent, in his style (says the ‘Sporting Globe’). His latest record was broken on the road in a “ sealed ” handicap from the scratch mark conducted by the Tasmanian Amateur Athletic Association. His time for the distance -was 9min 13 4-ssec, which shattered the previous Australian record by 19 4-sscc, and was only 14 l-ssec outside the world’s record established by Paavo Nurmi. Berwick's run was all the more meritorious as he encountered a strong head wind to the first turn, and was interfered with by traffic on the run home, whereas Nurmi’s time was established on a fast cinder track. The previous week Barwick broke the Australian four iniles record. Other Australian records ho has broken this season are: .—IO,OOO metres and five and six miles cross-country. His records entitle him to be recognised as oho of Australia's greatest distance runners.
