EX-WORLD'S CHAMPION
BILL MURPHY BENEFIT A correspondent, Mr A. J. Paltridge, writes to the Auckland ‘ Star ’An associate of the boxing business for upwards of forty years, J Avas compelled to take notice that during the discussion on a suggested benefit to Tom Heeney not a word had been mentioned on behalf of one of too brightest stars in the Avorld’s fistic firmament, a star long since set, possibly forgotten. I refer to the Auckland-bred and born “ Torpedo ” Billy Murphy. EndoAved with indomitable courage and spirit, ho Avas enabled to go forth from his native heath and Avrest the world’s featherweight championship from Ike (Spider) Weir, and bring back to Auckland the Richard K. Fox ‘ Police Gazette ’ diamond belt, emblematic of that title. Noav in the evening of his life, blessed Avith little more than that undaunted spirit, ho wields not a glove, but a tailor’s pressing iron in an endeavour to make ends meet. If ever a cuse merits the consideration of a kindlydisposed and sports-loving public surely this one does.
