TO END OVER-PRODUCTION

COFFEE PLANTATIONS UPROOTING 1)300,000,000 TREES. RIO DE JANEIRO, August 26. One thousand three hundred million coffee trees will be uprooted in Brazil if the National Coffee Department carries out the suggestion that lias been made by a group of producers that this method of reducing overproduction should be adopted. Hitherto the Government has disposed of part of its surplus of coffee bv burning it, and recently it was decided that 10,000,000 sacks (1,320,000,OOOlbs), or one-third of the estimated new coffee crop, should be ** sacrificed.” Under the scheme for uprooting the trees the owner of each plant destroyed would receive about lid as compensation. It is estimated that by this means the crop would be reduced by 10,000,000 bags. This would leave on an average of _ 15,000,000 bags for each new crop, which amount, it is considered, would easily be marketed.
