Humphrey Often Slovens was fined €2-1 at Auckland to-day for smuggling in a wireless sot valued at £2O from a Vancouver steamer at Auckland. The duty payable was £9 Ss Bcl. He pleaded guilty, but counsel said the plea would have boon not guilty were it not that the Customs Act said absence of intent to defraud was no defence.
