From the inception of the league he was interested in its aims and objects, and for many years he represented Central Otago in Parliament. The league had no firmer friend and no more powerful ally, as he brought to the consideration .of all questions an indomitable courage, a clear understanding, .and all the natural shrewdness and pertinacity of his race. The problems of the hinterland were especially his, and on such questions as the reading of the interior, the spread of irrigation, the growth of lucerne, and the search for gold he had a great practical knowledge and a keen insight.
