VALLEY BOWLING CLUB
ANNUAL MEETING The president (Mr A. M'Laren) was chairman at the annual of members in the pavilion last .evening. There was a large attendance. Before proceeding with the business, Mr M'Laren referred to the loss of two players through .death —Mr T. Sneeston and, Mr G. Paiix., Both had been popular members of the club, and their death was deeply regretted. In moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, the Chairman said tho club held a satisfactory position in the competitions last season. The membership had been slightly increased during the year, but additional members were wanted, so that the club could place another section in the competition. There had been a good deal of expense in the way of tho property, including the installation of a heating System and a new billiard table. Am alteration had been made in the constitution of the chib during the year, the tennis section being, separated from the bowling section. The ladies’ bowling section had given every assistance throughout the season* which was greatly appreciated. Mr M'Laren said he stood by the_ committee on the action it had taken in connection with tho expenditure on improvements. The money had been spent in a judicious manner, and members had only to look at the improvements to appreciate w,hat the committee had done. Mr J. Rhodes dealt at some length with the financial position of the club. Last year, he said, had been an exceptionally good one jn spite of the depression, but ho contended that the expenditure had been excessive, and that all tho improvements were not needed. It was necessary that the' club should live within its means in a time of stress. Mr Rhodes dealt with the numerous items of expenditure, and was questioned several times whether he was not overestimating the position. Mr G. Dunn and Mr H. Dodd said tho committee had carefully considered the question of expenditure before the improvements were unfortunate that the club had suffered a loss in revenue, but this was only in keeping with tho present economic depression. It was hoped, however, that there would be an increase in revenue during the coming year. All tho improvements made were substantial and beneficial to the club. ' After several other members had referred to the financial statement, the report and balance-sheet were adopted, after slight amendments had been made. It was decided to support the remit from the Caversham Club re more interclub matches.
The following office-bearers were elected for the ensuing year:—President, Mr A. M'Laren; vice-presidents —Messrs H. Dodd and E. Bruce; treasurer, Mr S. Brundell; secretary, Mr H J. Duncan; committee —Messrs A. M'Laren, H. Dodd, E. Bruce, S. Brundell, H. J. Duncan, J. Adair, J. Coulter, J. Crawford, and I. Grant; Green Committee—Messrs J. Coulter and G. Dunn; selectors—Messrs R. Gemmcll. G. Dunn, and A. Taylor; delegates to Dunedin Bowling Centre, Messrs H. Dodd and H. J. Duncan. The Chairman presented the prizes to the winners of club games last season.
