•Dead Heat. JOTTINGS. The winter scale of weights (Bst minimum) comes into force on June 7. After this week’s meeting Rational 11. will be tried out at the hurdle racing game. „ , „ . , Kuvera at Bst is one of the fancied candidates for the King’s Cup to be run at Melbourne on Saturday. D. O’Connor began his career as a trainer by taking Silver Salver in hand with the idea of making him a hurdle racer. However, as the gelding is not sound, O’Connor has decided not to persevere with him.

Flying Prince will be ridden in the Cornwall Handicap by L. Dulieu, and Master Brierly will be ridden by A. Or. Parsons. . _ Owners are reminded that at o p.m. on Friday next entries for the Great Northern Trotting Derby, of 1934, will close. On Tuesday next (June 6) nominations are due for Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup, Moonee Valley Cup, £2 200, and the Willialnstown Cup, £2,500 (l}m). . , -nr J K. Voitre rode one winner at Woodvill© on Saturday, Thrasher, and this brings his season’s total successes to 113. Four more will beat Gray’s, record. Voitre will be riding at Otaki this week. To mark the opening of the Doomben racecourse in Brisbane last week, the Queensland Turf Club, the ruling body of racing in that State, reduced a number of periods of disqualification considerably Royal' Chenault recorded a sound performance when be ran second to Reporter at New Brighton last Saturday, and he will have, friends m the Harewood Handicap to be decided at Addington on Saturday. He now meets Reporter on 12yds better terms.. Deportment was showing signs ot soreness just prior to when, be should have been leaving Washdyko for Wingatui, and rather than run any risk with the son of Masterpiece his trainer decided to cancel the trip. A Sydney paper states that several Australians have’ been negotiating for the New Zealand three-year-old Rebel Song, but the latest price fixed by the owner should stop all business. He names 2,000 gs and 20 per cent, of the Melbourne Cup stake if Rebel bong Wl Higb Commissioner schooled well over the steeplechase fences at Te Rapa last week in company with Simeon. He has done well since winning the two hurdle races at the Te Kuiti Meeting, and is expected to make a bold showing m the Great Northern Steeplechase; Rodosto, winner of the English. Two Thousand Guineas, was successful in the Premier Prix Citroen of 40,000 francs, seven furlongs, at Longchamps (Pans), on April 17. The chestnut son of Epmard and Ramondie is equal favourite for the Derby with Hyperion when the last mail left England. Full mark is making satisfactory progress at Otaki, and he will be taken to Ellerslie for the Great'Northern Hurdle race, in which he will be ridden by K. F. Robinson. Full Mark ran third in this event last year to Landmark and Makeup. . _ „ T T • Billy Boy’s trainer, R. W. Lewis, stated this week that as D. J. Burgess had been engaged for Thespis in the G N Hurdles he had obtained the services of L. Dulieu for his candidate. Dulieu has previously been successful on the horse in the Autumn Steeples, at Ellerslie last year, and also in the Waikato Hunt Cup. Burgess will, however, be available for the G.lf. Steeples on the second day. x , . It is understood (our Christchurch correspondent advises) that K. -LCoveney, the widely-known and capable New Zealand jockey, who was seriously injured in a mishap at Riccarton during the Canterbury Jockey Club s Easter Meeting, will have to retire from race riding. Coveney was injured when Scarlet Robe and others fell m the Papanui Handicap, and he has since been /in the Christchurch lublic Hospital. . , , The jumper Snow Prince has been responsible for a couple of nice exhibitions of schooling since arriving at Ellerslie, and his effort over the steeplechase course was very pleasing. Snow Prince has previously shown form over hurdles and country, and. as lie is a mass of condition, his prospects ,ot winning a race at the winter meeting appear bright. Mr R. J. Murphy’s yearling colt Marcus Cicero, by Hunting Song from Oratrix, has been sent from Eldershe Stud, where he was reared and broken in, to O. Emerson, at Riccarton, The youngster, the mare’s first production by Hunting Song, was born in October, and was backward as a foal, but has developed into a fine colt. Cricket Bat has had a busy season, and has taken part in twenty-four races since September. He has three wins, been second five times and third four times, his stake earnings being £790. He is x a horse that, apart from his racing, requires plenty of galloping. but as some of his best form for the season has been shown in his more recent outings, he evidently thrives on hard work. , . , „ , The Derby candidate, Lochiel. pulled up lame to-day (states a London cablegram dated May 27). Lochiel, by Coronach—Una Cameron, is a brother to Cameronian, the Derby winner of 1931, and he carries the colours of Mr J. A. Dewar, as his brother did. He started three times last season, and after being unplaced twice, he wound up by running third to Hyperion and Jesmond Dene in the Dewhurst Stakes. Riders for the two big jumping events at Ellerslie have been engaged as follow :

, Great Northern Hurdle Race: Landmark, F. Foster; Makeup, I. Tucker; Prince of Orange, H. Dulieu; Cruachan, J. Smith; Billy Boy, D. Burgess; Callamart, C. Thomson; Paddon, VV. Rennie; High Pitch, R.
