WARNING TO MOTORISTS.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —In your paper of the 4th inst. Mr R, M‘G. Laverty refers to the had state of the road at Henley, and also to Mr Coates’s effort to drive the traffic to tho railways by the imposition of a tyro and petrol tax, by the fixation of road charges, and by the failure to utilise the money for the purpose for which it was raised —namely, the upkeep of tho highways. Further, he concludes his letter hv writing: ‘‘l feel sure Mr Ansell will get the support of all motorists in his endeavours to get some consideration.” ‘ I would also try to issue a warning to motorists, and try to enlighten them concerning Mr Ansell’s actions in tho House. ! In tho first place, they are grossly inconsistent. When tho Government introduced its legislation imposing a further tax on petrol Mr Ansell raised a stormy protest, and when the Government proposed to transfer hundipds of thousands of pounds from the Highways Funds into the Consolidated Fund Mr Ansell made a lengthy speech in opposition. The speech was supposed to be such a brilliant affair that most of the northern papers featured it for the benefit of tho motorists, but—and this is where the warning is require:}— they failed to report how Mr Ansell voted.
