A NEW CODE
SAVINGS TO NEW YORK A new type of construction which is the substance of an altered building code prepared for New York recently should go further than anything yet done to solve the problem of providing'medcm; comfortable sanitary housing at_ reasonable rentals upon an economically profitable basis. Lighter and stronger forms of structural steel at less cost are provided for in the new code; concrete specifications have been revised to permit a greater load at. decreased cost, and brick work and masonry, specifications have been brought up to date. Plumbing is to be installed in accordance with the number of fixtures to be served, instead of under the former arbitrary requirements. 13y taking advantage of recent developments in fire-resisting construction, the new code permits the use of many materials hitherto banned. It provides that heating plants must bo of proper design, , be adequate for their work, and equipped so as .to ensure complete combustion of gases. Welding is provided for On certain forms of steel work, thus reducing the noise of riveting. ; It is estimated that the new code will make possible a saving of 50,000,OOOdoI on construction in any normal year.
