ILLICIT SPIRITS
DISTRIBUTOR OF “HOKONUr WHISKY FINED [Pjek United Press Association.] GORE, January 24. At the Gore Court to-day, James Henry' Rotting faced a charge that spirits on which the full duty was not paid were found on his promises at Matuura on December 30. Tho Collector of Customs described the defendant as a distributor of illicit spirit known as 11 Hokonui ” wliis.y, which was very dangerous to drink, from a health point of view. Under the Distillation Act, any person purchasing illicit whisky was liable to a fine of £SO and heavy imprisonment. The Magistrate (Mi; H. J, Dixon, S.M:), convicted the accused, stating that he had previously been warned. The accused, no doubt, carried on in a small way. Rotting ivas fined £IOO, and was given three months in which to pay.
