PLUNKET SHIELD

AUCKLAND'S SECOND STRIKE A GOOD RECOVERY [Per United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, January 23. The third day’s play in the Phmket Shield match between Auckland and Wellington ended with the game in a very interesting position. When stumps were drawn Auckland was 255 ahead with one wicket in hand. The wicket may show signs of wear to-mor-row, although it played easily to-day. The weather was again gloriously line. Wellington had little difficulty in securing a first innings lead. Parsloe was dismissed Ibw when three runs wore needed, but Newman placed the side ahead. James went on to pass the century, which he scored in excellent style in 168, minutes. It was his first century on Fden Park. He was eatight, at mid-ou in attempting a forcing on shot. The last two wickets added only 1 7 . Auckland made a disastrous start in its second innings. Postles was dismissed Ibw when the total Was 16. In the last over before lunch Mills fell into a palpable trap, hitting Freeman’s first ball, a blatant full toss, to Lamasou at deep log. After lunch Newman had a most effective bowling spell. Maintaining a perfect length and spinning back appreciably, he dismissed Weir, Vivian, and Dncre in rapid succession. Weir played over the top of a straight ball, Vivian was bottled with a perfect length ball which came in to take the off stump, and Da ere was out to a smart one-hand catch by the bowler.

A line fighting partnership by Whitelaw and Cush added 09 invaluable runs. The former gave a difficult chance to James off Blundell when he had scored two, but he went on to give his finest display in representative cricket. His off and cover driving and square cutting was exceptionally clean and stylish. He batted for 151 minutes, and was bowled in attempted to play across the break of a leg-spinner from Freeman. Bush dragged Freeman on to his wicket shortly after tea, and Matheson skied an easy catch to James when he appeared to he settling down. Bush had played a fine fighting innings at a .critical stage. Another valuable partnership followed between Pearson and Garrard. Both attacked the tiring bowling. Garrard following his successful bowling with some particularly vigorous hitting. He was dismissed Ibw after the partnership had added 99. Hampton played out the final over.

Wellington’s bowling slumped badly after Newman’s fine spell following lunch. Blundell was dangerous at times, and Freeman rocjiiired watching, but the later batsmen found no terrors in the attack. The visitors’ fielding reached a high standard, Dempster and Blandford being outstanding. James kept wickets brilliantly. Interesting cricket with the prospect of a close finish, is expected tomorrow. Details: — . AUCKLAND. First innings 306 Second Innings. A. .1. Postles Ibw b Parsloe 12 .1. E.
