COALITION CAUCUS

PLACID PROCEEDINGS [From Our Parliamentary Reporter.] WELLINGTON, January 24. The Coalition caucus opened this morning. When the luncheon adjournment was taken the Prime Minister explained that there were no developments to report. The exchange question had been under discussion the whole morning, among the speakers being himself, Mr Coates, and Air Stewart. It was intended to meet throughout the day and also to-morrow, the whole idea of the early caucus being to give the members of the party a full chance of understanding the Government’s policy and its justification, and to give an opportunity of hearing their views. Absentees were Air Tau Henare, Air Samuel, and Air Stallworthy. The only significance attaching to these names was in connection with Air Stallworthy, who, said Air Forbes, was not expected. It was significant that Air Stewart was among the first speakers, showing clearly that his resignation does not involve a complete break with the party. Other opponents of high exchange were present to hear the full programme. “ Nobody was called to order,’’ remarked a member, explaining the placid nature of the proceedings.
