STIRLING SCHOOL JUBILEE

CONCLUDING CELEBRATIONS The celebrations in connection with the seventy-fifth anniversary of the Stirling School were continued yesterday. During the day a picnic was held in conjunction with which a sports programme was arranged. Ideal weather favoured the gathering, which was hold in Mosley’s Bush. There was a largo attendance, and all spent a very enjoyable time. While the younger people took part in the various sports events the older ones congregated in the shade of the native bush and recalled the many romps they had enjoyed in those same surroundings long ago. , In the evening a banquet was held in the large marquee which was erected on the school grounds. Again the attendance was good, over 250 bein' seated. Air A., Anderson was in tin

chair. After a very enjoyable repast Mr J. M'Kissock. the oldest ex-pupil present, Jit the seventy-five candles on the birthday cake, and after these wore, extinguished by an old ex-pupil (Airs Ward, nee Anderson) the cake was cut, by Airs W, Smith, the first lady teacher.

After the honouring of the loyal toast, Air R. IP. Grigor proposed the .silent toast of 11 Those Who Have Run Their Course.” The next toast, that of ” The School.” was in the hands of Air Parker APKinlay. Ho recalled passing through the school, ami then passed on to compare the methods of education then and now. He regretted the lack of opportunity for the development of individuality in school children, and wished that in place of a stressing of the traditions of the Rritish isles more attention was given to the history of

our own country and its progress towards nationhood. Air W. T. Slater, the present head master, replied. The next toast, that of “ The Education Board,” was proposed by Air Robert AFLoan, who paid a tribute to the integrity and high ability of the men who acted on the boards throughout the dominion. The compliment was acknowledged by Air D. T. Fleming. In a neat and humorous speech Alr Colin Alurdocli proposed the health of the ox-teachers. Replies wore made by Mrs Morris and Messrs C. R. Smith and H. C. Jones. Other toasts wore; “ The School Committee ” (proposed by Air C. R. Smith and responded to by Messrs .P. A. Low, present chairman, and W. Lovie, exeommittcoman) ; “ Parliament and Local Bodies” (proposed by Air H. C. Anderson and responded to by Air Jos. Mosley, Air A. Renton, county council, and Air D. Boyd, power board) ; “Reunion Committee ” (proposed by Air F. Parker and replied to by Mr A. Anderson) ; “ The. Press ” (proposed_ by Mr iJ. G. Weir) ; and “ The Chairman ”

(proposed by Mr C. R. Smith). The evening concluded with the . singing of ‘ Auld Lang Syne.’ To-night the concluding function; a ball, will be held.
